U.S. stocks finished mostly higher on Wednesday, with the S&P 500 barely eking out a gain, after October's consumer-price index came in cooler than some market participants had expected. The Dow closed up by 47.

The blue-chip index was up 408 points, or 0.9%, to 44,137.34, with an hour and 15 minutes left in the session. The S&P 500 was up 0.6% to 6011.52. The Nasdaq Composite was up 0.2%. All three were on track for record closing highs.

The reaction across financial markets to the release of the PPI report for October has seen stock futures pare earlier gains, while Treasury yields have ticked higher. That's basically the reverse of how investors responded to Wednesday's CPI report.

The Dow and S&P 500 rose while the Nasdaq fell Wednesday as the stock market digested the CPI inflation report.
